Project - Change Owner

Last Modified On: May 12, 2025

The Project Owner is the person responsible for the overall direction and success of the project.

In most cases, the Project Manager is the Project Owner. By default, the user who creates the project is assigned as the Project Owner, but this can be updated as needed to reflect the appropriate person responsible.

This help article will show you how to change the project owner.

Who Can Change the Project Owner

Only the current Project Owner or Salesforce System Administrator can change the project owner, and the new owner must be an active Salesforce user.

What Happens when the Project Owner is Changed

When the project owner is changed, the following updates occur:

    • A new collaborator record is automatically created for the new project owner with permissions set to "Owner".

    • The former project owner's collaborator record is retained, but the permission is automatically adjusted to "Viewer".

    • The new project owner gains access to the project's related records (i.e. related Salesforce Tasks, Risk and Issues, etc.)
